A cake smash photography session is a must for all one year olds! These sessions are “care-free” and “go-with-the-flow” types of sessions. They are not posed and structured. Instead they are baby-led and beautiful! Some times the baby laughs and sometimes they cry. Either way, it will be special! Photographing your baby indulging, smashing, and poking at a cake is one of the most rewarding experiences as a baby photographer. Each session lasts 30-45 minutes. I start with images of your baby before the cake smash to warm them up to me, my studio and my flash photography.
Parents! Be prepared! Some babies will give you a work out. Sugar highs are real, and it makes babies run circles around me. It’s important you are there to put them back on stage for me! I highly suggest wearing workout clothes and plan on getting messy yourself.
Unless you are having siblings being photographed, please arrange to keep them at home or with a sitter. It’s important your baby’s focus in on me and my camera versus looking at a sibling beside me. My studio is small, and younger siblings have a hard time not wanting to be a part of the smashing, which makes it hard for me to do my job.
Each cake smash session is unique. I use the exact colors, themes, and items you choose. Building your child’s cake smash is easy and I’m here to walk you through it every step of the way! Here are some tips for your colorful, messy first birthday photos.

Choosing a location is easy!
Most clients choose to do the cake smash session about 4-6 week prior to their child’s birthday to ensure edits back in time for invitations and prints at the party. These sessions are done in the studio of Stephanie Erin Photography in Leeds UT. Choosing a studio session is usually the easiest since we can work around your child’s nap time to ensure no cranky butt’s in the studio! (Dads I’m also talking to you!) There is also the option of doing the session at the child’s birthday party where the props, backdrop, and lighting can be brought to the party and the smashing may be done in front of a live audience of your party guests. You may also choose an outdoor sunset session, grandma’s back yard, or even your very own kitchen. I recommend choosing a location where the smashing may be done on the floor for easier clean up!
Your child’s outfit is a very important piece to the cake smash puzzle. Depending on your background choice, your child’s outfit will need to be corresponding, comfortable, and appropriate for the session. Some parents have a special birthday outfit or costume they will have their baby wear at their party which makes it important to photograph them in. If you do not have an outfit you want to use, I will provide one for you!

I personally have each cake made specifically for your session in the colors or theme you want. Any kind of cake is possible! I highly recommend NOT choosing Red or Brown (Chocolate) frosting to eliminate the look of a zombie baby or a diaper accident gone utterly wrong.
If your child has any allergies, I kindly recommend you bring your own cake.
For sessions taking place in my studio, I use thick colored paper for bold, beautiful color and easy clean up! You have the choice of 68 paper colors to choose from! Certain colors need 2-4 weeks to ship, so it’s a good thing to plan early. I keep the props simple and timeless. I have a minimalist design and look to all my images thus keeping the focus on your child.
All sessions end with a little Johnsons & Johnsons bubble bath. Your baby will go home smelling so good and ready for a crash and burn nap. Leaving all the sticky mess in the studio. Bath, towels, and tub are all provided by Stephanie Erin Photography.
I keep all your edits minimal! I don’t edit out the mess! The “mess” is part of your memories, and I am hired to capture your memories, not wash them away.
Please allow 2-3 weeks for post processing to be completed.
