Family Sessions : What to Wear | Stephanie Erin Photography | St George Utah Newborn Photographer

One of the most stressful parts of your family portrait session will always be "WHAT TO WEAR?!?"

I have being excelling in the photography business long enough where I have developed a talent for designing your whole family's outfits in only a few minutes. I can envision everything, from head to toe, I have you covered. Follow my suggestions, as well as my favorite places to shop, and I can guarantee your family portraits will be perfectly stylized.

Start with yourself.

Choose your outfit first, then choose your family members' outfits to coordinate with your outfit. For mothers, I prefer a loose dress. Long maxi gowns are gorgeous and truly make a statement, while shorter dresses will make you look young... but be sure it's not too young for you! ;) Long sleeves or 3/4 sleeves are perfect in any season to help cover your bare arms if you desire.

Depending on your outfit, choose your color palette.

Each season has a different color palette.

Each location has a different color palette.

Never hesitate to ask what would look best at the location you chose!

Muted, soft earthy tones will basically look amazing everywhere.

Think about TEXTURES rather than patterns.

Best places to shop.

Mother's Dresses: Forever 21, Bohme, Anthropologie, Fillyboo

Father's: Old Navy, J Crew, Banana Republic, H&M

Children & Baby: Gap, Zara, Trish Scully, Old Navy, Joyfolie

Simplicity is ideal.

Keep your outfits relaxed, comfortable and hassle free. If straps won't stay up, don't wear it. If bows keep falling out, leave them at home. Your portraits are about your love and bond together, not your outfits.

Other ideas...

Patterns - keep any prints smaller rather than larger.

Jeans - do not have everyone wear jeans, variety is KEY!

Denim shirts, denim skirts, denim dresses... yes yes yes!

You can't go wrong with OFF WHITE or IVORY. At least ONE person should be in off white or ivory. Cream is another story...

NO WRITING or LOGOS on any of your outfits.
